In the aftermath of the Awami League government’s collapse, Bangladesh has entered a phase of intense political retribution marked by violence, arson, and targeted persecution of individuals associated with the former regime. Among those at exceptionally high risk is Sayeda Begum, a former Senior Information Officer of the Press Information Department, widely known as a hardline Awami League loyalist and an influential figure within the state’s propaganda apparatus.
Political Loyalty and Rise Within the Power Structure
Over a career spanning nearly 25 years, Sayeda Begum served under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, particularly during the tenures of Hasanul Hoque Inu and Hasan Mahmud. Within bureaucratic circles, she was known not as a politically neutral civil servant, but as a deeply loyal supporter of the Awami League, entrusted with implementing politically sensitive directives. Her willingness to act on ministerial instructions and advance the ruling party’s narrative enabled her rise within the power structure, while simultaneously alienating opposition-aligned officials.
Recruitment Manipulation and Political Enmity
Sayeda Begum played a central role in the controversial 2014 recruitment process, during which appointments were allegedly influenced to favor Awami League–aligned candidates. This process triggered strong backlash from opposition figures, particularly senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas, whose preferred candidates were excluded.
This episode cemented Sayeda Begum’s reputation among opposition groups as a symbol of partisan abuse of state power, placing her on informal target lists long before the regime change.Role as a State Propaganda Figure
As the principal compiler of “Padma Bridge in Newspapers,” a publication showcasing overwhelmingly pro–Awami League media coverage, Sayeda Begum became publicly identified as a key propagator of the regime’s ideological narrative. The publication was widely distributed within government institutions and party-aligned platforms, reinforcing her political profile.
Opposition actors now view her not merely as a former official, but as an ideological collaborator of the fallen government.Post-August 2024 Retaliatory Environment.Since August 2024, Bangladesh has seen:
Targeted attacks on former Awami League–aligned officials
Politically motivated criminal charges
Mob violence against perceived collaborators
In this environment, Sayeda Begum’s high visibility, documented loyalty, and past controversies place her at acute risk. There is a widely held belief that the current state apparatus is unable or unwilling to offer effective protection to individuals like her.
Relevance to International Protection
Sayeda Begum faces a real chance of serious harm based on:
Actual and imputed political opinion
Past association with the Awami League power structure
Absence of state protection in the current political climate
Her forced return would therefore expose her to foreseeable persecution, meeting the threshold for international protection under refugee and complementary protection frameworks
